28 August 2004 – 10 Million People Covered by Disability Law
The official estimate of the number of people covered by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in Great Britain was revised this month by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC), the independent body established by the British Government to eliminate discrimination against disabled people and promote equality of opportunity.
The previous estimate of 8.6 million disabled people is now considered outdated. The DRC now estimates that there are “about 10 million people” in Great Britain covered by the DDA, a figure based on the findings of a recent survey commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Another recent surveys estimates that about 6.9 million people of working age have a long-term disability.
The DRC say that the reasons for the increased estimate are likely to include demographic changes since the last estimate was made in 1997. Technological advances and improvements in healthcare have meant that people are living with health conditions for longer – good news for us all. However, the DRC warns that society needs to adapt to how the world is changing and attribute greater importance to making opportunities open for all.
